Control of Dogs (Scotland) Act 2010

The Bill received Royal Assent on 26th May 2010.

The Act changes the law so that action can be taken against dog owners if their pets are dangerously out of control in any place, including their own homes.

Scotland is consistently seeing around 600 reported dog attacks each year, more than double the figure 10 years ago. Hospitals in 2007-08 treated 363 people who had been bitten or struck by a dog.

Nearly one in four of the construction sites visited by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) during March failed safety checks.

1st April, 2010

Inspectors from HSE carried out checks at 2014 construction sites across Great Britain as part of an intensive inspection campaign aimed at reducing death and injury in one of Britain's most dangerous industries. 

2414 contractors were inspected during the campaign.A total of 691 enforcement notices were issued at 470 sites, with inspectors giving orders for work to be stopped immediately in 359 instances for either unsafe work being carried out at height or where sites lacked 'good order'.

During 2008/09 there were 53 deaths in construction and 11,264 injuries. Last year, inspectors visited 1759 sites, 2145 contractors and issued 491 enforcement notices during a similar month-long initiative.

According to figures from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), there were five fatalities and 1,405 major injuries as a result of slips, trips and falls in Scottish workplaces in 2008/08, with a further 2,742 workers taking more than three days off.
